Voluntary National Review - 2026
The 2026 Tanzania VNR is the third Voluntary National Review undertaken by the country, following previous reviews in 2019 and 2023. Despite significant financial resource constraints during this reporting period, TSDP through its members successfully conducted 20 consultation sessions
in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, reaching over 1,000 organizations and representatives of vulnerable and marginalized groups.
This report presents a citizens’ assessment of SDG implementation in Tanzania. It documents civil society contributions to the implementation, follow-up, and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals; highlights existing gaps and challenges; and draws recommendations forfast-tracking progress toward 2030. The preparation of this report involved community-based organisations, national NGOs, international NGOs, regional and district networks, while ensuring that marginalized groups, the furthest, and the poorest of the poor were fully engaged.
We are grateful to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania for creating space for nonstate actors and for the continuing collaboration in the VNR process. We extend gratitude and appreciation to our platform members, the broader civil society in Tanzania, and our partners for
their invaluable contributions.
CSOs Recommendations
Civil society organizations in Tanzania recommend the following with regard to overall implementation of SDGs in Tanzania:
- Policy coherence across sectors, most policies are pre-SDGs era, there is a need to review and realign the policy framework across all sectors
- Increase budgetary allocations on specific SDGs related targets that are priority to Tanzania Create awareness and ownership of the SDGs to the citizens
- Establish a formal coordination mechanism for SDGs, that adopts a multi stakeholders approach to ensure representation and inclusion
- Strengthen and capacitate the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance as an independent institution capable of making binding decisions
- Gender equality and women empowerment should be mainstreamed across the board, at all levels of planning and implementation of National SDGs targets.
- Integration of Climate Change priorities in Local Government Authorities plans and strategies, as well as budget allocations.
- Timely, effective and full disbursement of funds allocated for development projects in government budgets
- Cost and finance the implementation of the National Development Plans, the Five Year Development Plan II and MKUZA III, which are the main implementation vehicles for SDGs inTanzania.
